During the holidays in my home we decorate the entire house! We even have a Christmas tree in the kitchen and the laundry room! We watch one Christmas movie every night and bake cookies all day. On Christmas Eve we have a get together after Mass with family. My father gets all of the children (and us children-at-heart) together in the living room to read The Polar Express, something he has been doing with us children-at-heart for 27 years. At the end of the story someone gets to keep Santas sleigh bell and the small children are allowed to open their stockings! After the company leaves my little ones leave their letters for Santa along with milk, cookies, and baby carrots…then it’s off to bed with prayers and HOPEFULLY a nights sleep passed 6am! Oh I can’t wait for Christmas!!

We decorate every room in the house, even the bathrooms! Each child has their personal tree in a theme of their choosing and we have a main tree that we all go together to choose that we decorate with 40 yrs worth of handmade and family ornaments. Each has a story that we love to retell.

We usually start the season by unpacking our decorations while making cookies and playing holiday music. That evening we cuddle up to a classic holiday movie and homemade hot chocolate. After all the unpacking, we start our week packing up old toys and clothes to donate them to a local charity where we will volunteer as a family. Last year we made cards for low-income retirees and disabled children. We always enjoy doing something for others during the holidays. Around this time we also do our annual family photo cards to send out because it seems to be the only time we get all 5 of us in the same picture.

It’s pretty easy with two small kids. They think everything is amazing! We live 30 mins from Disney World so we love to drive around out there and look at the lights on all the hotels and buildings. They really make it amazing!

Making the holidays special to me is all about traditions!! Some traditions are ones I’ve brought up from my childhood, some are new to our family, but our goal is to do them every year. I know what special memories it is building when my 3 year old this year says… “we have to get the tree so we can drink the hot stuff that is yummy”. Yep, we always drink hot apple cider (ciper as my kids call it) while decorating the tree and Christmas morning as we open presents. We also hang a new ornament each night on the advent wall calendar we have - a memory I have as a child and one my children continue on. And it wouldn’t be the season without us baking cookies with our cookie press every year. Finally, my dad always LOVED fireworks so it wasn’t a holiday without some fireworks. The kids used to watch from the window and drink hot cider while he fired them off in the snow. Now, we save one or two little fireworks from 4th of July and all head to the yard to fire them off when it gets dark. No snow, but still with cider :).

We keep the magic of Christmas alive by continuing some family traditons year after year. The first one is the decorating of the Christmas tree. It’s really fun to have all the family over, drag out the ornaments, unpack them and just relive the memories that each ornament evokes. Our tree is a complete mish mash of ornaments - from the ones we handmade in Kindergarten to the electronic ones that flash and spin! Such a great variety! Our second tradition is cookie baking. We have great recipes from my grandmother and family friend, both of whom have passed on. Spending time in the kitchen, making those same recipes they made year after year, keeps them close in our hearts. And the last tradition we share is getting the family together for dinner and a present exchange. No matter how hard it is to coordinate schedules, especially as the kids get older, we always, always make this get together work. The location, date and time might change every year, but the spirit of our Christmas get together is always present, no matter where we are.

We keep the holiday magical with special projects all month long, starting Thanksgiving weekend and continuing all the way through Christmas. Our family is very artsy-craftsy, and one of our favorite traditions is building gingerbread houses… Each year we go and get some of those foamie kits from the craft store, and each child gets to decorate their own. We have quite a village of houses now! They make a lovely and homey display! We also host cookie swaps with other families, and the children have a party with their friends to make small gifts and handmade cards to share at school. Come time to open the gifts on Christmas morning, their is not a single person without a special, personal gift that was handmade with love by family!!!
