We’re going to go out on a limb and guess that few would consider learning about diabetes to be fun. But our friends at the Orlando Science Center have taken science (particularly blood) to a whole new level this summer.
What kid wouldn’t want to walk through a 40-foot blood vessel?
The centerpiece of the Orlando Science Center’s newest exhibit, a ginormous blood vessel, is tricked out with 40,000 pulsating LED lights and a heartbeat that you can feel in the floor as you walk. A deeper look inside the great red blood vessel reveals an interactive, educational tour through the world of diabetes.
After spinning and twirling your way through the blood vessel, step inside the lab, where kiddos can get a first-hand look at medications. Completely interactive, kids can; Discover it, Try it, Prove it, Approve it and Make it. From a giant jigsaw puzzle to an oversized slot machine, like real drug trails, even the “games” require multi attempts to pass on to the next step.
Typically we’d not recommend taking your itty bitty somewhere for a shot. But the “air shots” intended to show them that not all shots hurt (like those tiny insulin ones that those with diabetes often get) are sure to be a blast of fresh air.
No tour through the land of diabetes would be complete without a stop at the prevention stations – excersize and diet. Here you will find one refrigerator door that was made to be kept open – the Rappin’ Refrigerator is sure to be the biggest hit with dancing divas of all ages. WARNING parents – you will be humming the Refrigerator Raider rap for the rest of the day!
That’s right, the science center has figured out a way to make diabetes something fun to discover. For a sneak peek into the exhibit visit Diabetes a Deeper Look – don’t miss the Refrigerator Raider rap. The Diabetes a Deeper Look exhibit will remain open at Orlando Science Center until September 2010.
