PLAYGROUND Editor Dishes About Disney’s Yummy Food

Posted on May 5th, 2010

PLAYGROUND’s managing editor, Jenny Fauser, recently spent the weekend at Disney being wined and dined at the Five Stars to Mickey Bars event. While she was there, Jenny tweeted about how great everything was, so we wanted to learn more about her fab weekend at Disney.

First things first, while you were at Disney where did you stay and what did you do?

It was a real treat to experience Disney like a tourist for a change. I highly recommend anyone considering a staycation to check out Disney’s Boardwalk Inn. I spent the weekend chowing down on some of the delicious food Disney offers at their resorts and in the parks. Oh and I played at Magic Kingdom and EPCOT’s International Flower and Garden Festival - gorgeous!

You tweeted a lot about how great the food was while you were out there. Which restaurants are your top recommendations for locals to check out?

I really enjoyed the character breakfast at the Cape May Café in Disney’s Beach Club Resort. The food is served buffet-style with things like Mickey Mouse waffles (of course) and a yogurt bar, which I thought was pretty unique and right up my alley. The characters come to your table, making it less stressful to get that money shot of your kiddo with Goofy, Donald or Minnie Mouse.

If you’re looking for a date night, try the Flying Fish Café. It’s a great place for seafood lovers and if you’re like me, and not typically a seafood foodie, then order the steak. It is delicious! Afterwards, grab some yummy sweets at one of the street vendors or from Seashore Sweets and take a moonlit stroll down the Atlantic City themed boardwalk together. Sigh …

As locals, we often think we know everything there is to know about the Mouse’s house, but there are always new things happening. What was the most surprising thing you learned about what Disney is doing now?

The weekend was all about food. Going into it I wasn’t so sure there would be anything that surprised me. I figured since everything Disney does is such high quality, the food would be as well. And it was! What really impressed (& surprised) me was the extensive effort Disney puts into accommodating guests who are vegetarians, vegans and those with food allergies. Seriously, at each reservations-required restaurant, our server would ask us who had food allergies. I’ve never seen any restaurant take such steps to cater to their guests. Disney accommodates guests for their individual tastes. That surprised me for a place that’s biggest challenge is probably catering to the masses.

There is so much to love about a trip to Disney, what was your most memorable moment?

It’s always the fireworks. Something about the ability to choreograph those beautiful explosions in the sky with music amazes me. (And, let’s be honest, I just love the sparkles!) This time I watched the EPCOT fireworks lakeside while noshing on gourmet desserts and sipping a little nightcap … could you ask for anything more relaxing?

Jenny’s husband, Ben, and her daughters, Saylah (4) and Audrey (2) joined her for her Disney adventure on Sunday to the Magic Kingdom. (She had a little girl’s weekend away prior to that and highly suggests it for any of you moms out there. Wink wink) When she isn’t exploring Disney, working on the next issue of PLAYGROUND, and being a mom, Jenny likes to hike, shop and chill on the beach.
